Plantation style is a shutter style commonly used in the 19th Century American South. Plantation style shutters are designed to remain closed and they feature wider, movable louvers to let in air and light.

The Plantation House

Boone Hall's original plantation house was built in the mid-eighteenth century, and was constructed of both wood and brick. In 1935 it was restored by Thomas A. Stone, a Canadian diplomat who came to know the South through his wife, a South Carolinian. Stone was fortunate in finding enough of the original, hand-made brick stored in good condition with which to accomplish the restoration. The lines of the original house were respected, yet the house was restored to fulfill its intent of a gracious private home in which the plantation owner resided in comfort, and in which elegant rooms welcomed visitors to the plantation in the grand style that made the ante bellum South legendary. Today the plantation home is faithful to its original purpose; it remains a private home, but visitors receive a tour of the first floor's rooms. Costumed hostesses point out furniture and household accessories of the past three centuries, all carefully selected to reflect the way of life led by the planters.
